INTRODUCTION
The horrendous attack of 9-11 on the United States by Muslim terrorists has
kindled concerns, Western and universal, regarding the nature and designs of Islam.
These include questions about the our nation's security, the relationship of Muslim
terrorists to Islam in general, the ability of the West to pursue justice in many rogue
states/nations, the growth of Islam at home and abroad, the relation of Christianity to
Islam, and what the future holds. No one is able to foresee clearly all the possible
ramifications.

Some (for example, Samuel Huntington of Harvard, in his "The Clash of
Civilizations," for Foreign Affairs; and Daniel Pipes) have written that the events
fostered by Muslim extremists of the last few years portend a coming clash of
civilizations along historic religious lines between the West and the Muslim non-West.
This collision will affect world history and civilization in a destructive way.
These concerns suggest that the scope of the conflict may have eschatological
import. Is the conflict a harbinger of the final end of the age? It would be foolish not to
assess the "signs of the times," as Jesus warned us.
Of particular concern to Christians should be the resurgence of Islam and its
challenge to Christianity. September 11 is a wake-up call to examine the religion that
increasingly rivals Christianity for winning the hearts and minds of people around the
world. Islam is aggressively pursuing its cause in comprehensive ways. Its apologetic is
well-articulated, scholarly, attractive, and persuasive.

There are several reasons why there is no assurance that the West will prevail in bringing the terrorist
element of Islam to an end. There are millions of Muslims sympathetic to the cause of terrorism against the
West; the terrorism is increasingly couched in religious terms as a war (jihad) against infidels, when before
the attack the terrorism was basically secular (as in Iraq); the terrorism finds a fertile field among the
hundreds of millions of people who live in poverty and who have nothing to lose but something to gain,
especially Muslim honor; the higher birth rates among Muslim women compared to Western women; the
history of past clashes between Islam and Christianity in the 8
th
and 17
th
centuries; and the increasing
inability of the West to export spiritual values.

A resource containing scores of works dealing with Islam is the CD, "The World of Islam: Resources for
Understanding" (Colorado Springs: Global Mapping International, 2000).
